It's easy to get caught up in cooking and mindlessly complete tasks. But it's important to stay vigilant when working with things that could easily burn and possibly cause a kitchen fire. Below are some steps you can take to protect your property when cooking.
- Never leave your cooking unattended – stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If you have to leave the kitchen, even for a second, turn off the stove. Also, don't forget to check your food often to make sure it doesn't burn!
- Use timers for everything to make sure you don't leave something and then get distracted. Also have a way to remind yourself something is done cooking!
- Keep the kids away from the cooking area. Enforce a “kid-free zone” and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove.
- Keep anything that can catch fire - pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains—away from your stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat. This also includes things like hair or dangling sleeves, make sure they don't come close to hot stove tops!
- Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup.
